Meet the apparatus

What is a Reformer?

The Reformer is a Pilates apparatus with a padded carriage that glides along a frame. Springs connect the carriage to the frame; a footbar and straps give your hands or feet different points of contact.

01Carriage

The padded platform that moves along the frame.

02Springs

Beneath the carriage, adjustable springs provide resistance and support.

03Footbar

A contact point for the feet or hands, adjustable through five angles.

04Shoulder rests

Individually adjustable padded supports, with an adjustable headrest to help position you on the carriage.

05Straps & pulleys

Loops and ropes connect the arms or legs to the carriage. Pulley height and width can be adjusted to change the line of pull.

Adjustable spring resistance can support a movement or make it more demanding. More resistance does not always mean a harder exercise: the challenge depends on the movement, your position and the control it asks of you.

Your teacher sets up the apparatus with you. There is no need to know the equipment before your first visit.

Why we chose BASI Systems

The apparatus adapts to you.

A good setting is not simply “light” or “heavy”. It considers your proportions, the movement and the support or challenge you need, whether you are beginning or refining an advanced practice.

01

Finer resistance choices

Three gear-bar positions allow fine resistance adjustments within the same spring combination. Your teacher uses these settings to make each movement appropriate for you.

02

Room to move

The generous carriage gives you space to find your position. BASI Systems describes its professional Reformer as having the industry’s longest and widest carriage.

03

Quiet, considered construction

A beechwood frame and aircraft-grade aluminium support a smooth, quiet carriage ride. Padded, non-slip upholstery and durable hospital-grade vinyl are designed for regular studio use.

A different perspective

One apparatus. Many possibilities.

You do not stay in one position for a whole class. Changing your relationship to the carriage changes the experience: sometimes supported, sometimes asking you to find your own balance.

  1. 01Lying
  2. 02Seated
  3. 03Kneeling
  4. 04Standing
  5. 05Whole-body integration

From familiar, supported positions to more demanding balance and coordination, your teacher chooses the next step for your level. Standing work is introduced when appropriate and is not expected on your first day.

The BASI difference

More than a machine. A method.

The Reformer is one part of a complete Pilates practice. At BASI, it works alongside the Mat, Cadillac, Wunda Chair and barrels within one connected method.

Tower work: part of the complete apparatus method
01

A balanced structure

The BASI Block System organises a session into a considered sequence, balancing the body rather than repeating only the movements that feel familiar.

02

Progress that makes sense

Your teacher selects and develops the repertoire as your control and understanding grow. Progress is not simply a faster class or a heavier spring.

03

Attention to your movement

Movement analysis and precise cueing turn a general instruction into something useful for you: a small adjustment, a clearer point of focus, a better connection.

Reformer & Tower. A wider repertoire.

The Tower adds springs, a Push-Through Bar and a Roll-Down Bar. With the mat conversion in place, the apparatus becomes a raised surface for Tower work, rather than a moving carriage.

Depending on the class and programme, we bring together Reformer, Tower and Cadillac-based repertoire. Our full Cadillacs are used primarily for private and semi-private training. This wider apparatus method gives your practice more ways to develop.

How we move

Strength, with room to explore.

These are movement families you may meet in class. They are not a fixed workout or exercises to copy from a photograph. Each class brings them together according to the group and its level.

01

Footwork

A grounded place to explore leg alignment, spring resistance and the connection between your feet and the rest of your body.

02

Straps & hip work

Controlled leg movement with support from the straps, connecting mobility with a steady centre.

03

Upper-body spring work

Resistance through the arms, with attention to shoulder organisation and the support of the trunk.

04

Core & trunk work

Movement and stability through the centre, with breath, spinal articulation and control.

05

Kneeling & standing work

A different base of support brings balance and coordination into focus.

06

Full-body integration

The parts come together: arms, legs and trunk working as one connected movement.

Before your first visit

A few things worth knowing.

Can I begin without Pilates experience?

Yes. Start with the required Intro Private Session. We introduce the equipment, learn about your movement history and recommend the right next step. You do not need to be flexible or know any exercises beforehand.

I have used a Reformer elsewhere. Do I still need Intro Private?

Yes. The introduction is required for every new Reformer or equipment client at our studio. It gives us time to understand your experience, discuss physical concerns and assess the class level that suits you.

How is Foundation different from All Levels?

Foundation moves more slowly and gives you time for setup, technique and alignment. All Levels assumes equipment experience and confidence with transitions; it is not a beginner class. Your Intro Private teacher helps you choose.

What should I wear and bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely, and bring water. Avoid loose items that can catch on the apparatus. If you are unsure about footwear or anything else for your first session, ask us when you book.

What if I have an injury or a physical concern?

Tell us before your visit and discuss it in your Intro Private Session. We can talk through suitable class options or private training. Where needed, seek guidance from your healthcare professional before starting.

Is a Reformer class only on the Reformer?

Our Reformer & Equipment classes sit within the complete BASI apparatus method. Depending on the programme, your teacher may also use the Tower, Chair or other equipment. The Eversports description gives the details for your class.
